From the answers here, I think I’m going to see a lot of pre-existing conditions of another disease prior to the AIHA.
We all know that pre-existing conditions weakens the natural immune system and it opens up the patient to a plethora of other problems.

Probably a virus picked up in the Caribbean on a cruise

Mine showed up completely out of the blue, without any preexisting conditions. It was preceded by months of exhaustion, heart palpitations and very high pulse rate at the end. At about that time, my neck and shoulders were extremely stiff, so I got a massage and blacked out after it.

As far as reasons, I suspect chronic stress, potential environmental factors, toxins deliberately added to food and/or cigs, childhood vaccines, perhaps birth control pills and kind of mindless use of antibiotics in the past... or maybe something genetic... My Mom had a stillbirth before me. According to her, the baby was OK till birth and the doctors contributed to this outcome, which is highly believable, but I have no way of knowing the truth. I do remember some talk about Rh incompatibility, though. I don't think any of us will ever know...
