Tips For Keeping Warm And Functional

A myAIHAteam Member asked a question 💭

I have cold activated AIHA and in winter it's hell - I feel freezing and in pain all of the time to the point where I can't think straight let alone do anything. Does anyone have any tips for keeping warm and functioning in cold weather? I already wear lots of layers and gloves and hat indoors, hot drinks and hot water bottles etc. all the obvious things. I wondered if there was an 'outside the box' or less obvious method that helps you to keep mobile / reduce the pain?

Members rallied around someone struggling with cold-activated AIHA, offering creative solutions beyond standard layers to stay warm and mobile during painful winter months. Several members shared practical tools that made a real difference, including USB-charged heated socks, vests, and mittens, wearing double surgical masks to warm inhaled air, tucking hand warmers into bras and socks, taking hot showers after cold exposure, and using electric blankets or saunas for deep warmth. A recurring theme was treating elevated heating bills as a necessary medical expense, with members noting that some utility companies offer discounts when a doctor writes a letter, and the importance of self-advocacy when navigating frustrating gaps between specialist care.

There are a lot of great new technology clothing options out there now that will help. I purchased socks, vest and mittens that charge using USB port. They are lightweight and not too expensive.

In the freezing winter air I wear a mask, a surgical mask because it heats up the air I breathe. And I have warm gloves. Eventually u could get a thermos that keeps hot drinks for a few hours to keep warm. I say I wear a mask but actually I wear two to bounce the air I breathe back in my mask so I don't breathe cold air. Because two layers are more isolating

I have some fleece lined leggings that are warm and probably warmer with thermals under them.

Get high quality clothes, maybe wool and knits and stuff like that. There are these things in fashion called thermal clothes that goes under your normal clothes, I think these are made of fleece
