Association Of AIHA With Solar Urticaria
A myAIHAteam Member asked a question 💭

Yesterday, a dermatologist told me I have “solar urticaria”, an immediate but temporary adverse skin reaction from exposure to direct sunlight.

Has anyone here had any experience with solar urticaria?

I askwd the dr if her spleen is sestrpying the red blooxd cells why dont ypu just remove it.. at fkrst they thought inwas crazy because your spleen helps builx your immunity but at 70 something i figured she jad been exposed to prwtty much eveeything there was. So with mo other jope rjyley removed her spleen. She has been aiha free foe ovee 20 years. Zhe even sur ived having covid and af 93 thats a hell of an accompolishment on it own.

Recently, in the last two weeks of January, 2023, I noticed that my solar urticaria has vanished!
That is, even in direct sunlight on the tops of my feet, my legs, and waist, there is no sign of rashes as I had before.
I honestly can’t explain what happened but I’m obviously delighted. 😄

I didn’t either until yesterday!
I met with a dermatologist yesterday, (down the hall from my haematologist), and she told me I’m the first case for that condition that she has seen this year.

Direct sun generates rapid, itchy, and burning red rashes, starting with the tops of my feet and then running up my legs all the way up my waist if exposed.
But within five or 10 minutes after I remove myself from the direct rays of the sun, everything disappears like it was.
A pre-applied sunscreen eliminates the problem.

The dermatologist wanted to know if the solar urticaria was related to my AIHA.
I told her that I didn’t know.
